A 50-year-old Wareham woman was medflighted on Saturday afternoon after crashing into a pole and a tree on Gibbs Avenue.

Gibbs Avenue was blocked off for most of Saturday afternoon after the driver of the car struck the pole and "snapped" it, according to Wareham Fire Department Acting Chief Pat Haskell.

The driver was trapped in the car and had to be extricated with jaws of life before being brought to Tobey Hospital to be medflighted to Rhode Island Hospital. She sustained serious injuries, according to Wareham Police Chief Kevin Walsh.

Initial reports indicated the car was on fire, but that was not the case, Haskell said.

Eversource was on the scene until the evening making sure the area was safe from electrical hazards. Power was out in the immediate area for four or five hours, Walsh said.

The cause of the accident is under investigation.
