Scouts send sweets overseas to Wareham service members

Girl Scouts are shipping off America's favorite cookies to troops this week, sending support and sweets to Wareham troops in Guam, Japan, Kosovo and beyond.

The Girl Scout Daisy Troop with kindergarten and first grade girls collected 57 packages of Girl Scout cookies that will be mailed to six Wareham service members. They made colorful cards for the service members to be added to the care packages.

"I think they'll be happy when they get the cookies," said Victoria Baptiste, 6, as she colored a picture to accompany the cookies.

There are 11 girls in the troop, and for most of them it is their first year in Girl Scouts.

"They're very excited to do anything they can to help," said troop leader Christina Baptiste. This is the first community service project the troop has done, she said.

Megan Park, the other troop leader, said she hopes the project will give the girls an understanding of the military and the families they are away from.

"We also wanted to show our support and involve our community to help bring joy to the members of our town who are not with us right now," Park said. "And this small gesture was an age-appropriate way of helping out."
