Wareham High School boys basketball team make playoffs

Feb 28, 2018

The Wareham High School boys basketball team is in the South Division 3 playoffs with a game scheduled on March 2.

The No. 10 seed boys (14-7) will play No. 2 seed Bishop Stang (20-1) at 6:30 p.m. at Bishop Stang High School in North Dartmouth.

Led by guard Dominic Mello, the boys’ season featured several come-from-behind wins. Mello in particular has had an excellent season. The sophomore scored 41 points – the most any South Coast player scored in a single game this season – against Classical High School on Feb. 3. On Feb. 12, Mello hit a dramatic jump shot with seconds left in overtime against Case High School, propelling the team to a 60-58 win.

Head Coach Steve Faniel said while the boys lack the physical presence of some South Coast teams, they make up for that with speed and perimeter shooting. He noted that rebounding will be the team’s focus.

Mello said he was looking forward to seeing what the team can do in the playoffs.

“We’ve got some big games coming up,” said Mello. “Hopefully we can win them.”
