Storm-damaged East Wareham boat storage facility torn down

Mar 10, 2018

A condemned, storm-damaged boat storage facility in East Wareham in danger of collapsing was torn down on March 9.

The building, located at 3236 Cranberry Highway, belonged to Continental Marina. It suffered extensive damage during a March 2 nor’easter that brought down trees and electrical wires across Wareham, knocking out power to 99 percent of town for a day and a half.

At the height of the storm, high winds blew sheet metal siding off of the building and warped its metal frame. The siding caused a dangerous situation on Cranberry Highway, prompting a response from the Onset Fire Department.

“Pieces of steel were flying across the road like guillotines,” said Onset Fire Chief Ray Goodwin. “We thought someone was going to get killed.”

In the days before the building was taken down, boats stored inside were removed. Two cranes demolished the building on March 9 and trucks carried away the debris.
