Janet Onanian, 83

Janet A. (Sorensen) Onanian, 83, of Onset, formerly of Newton and Grand Shores West in North Reddington Beach, Florida, passed away peacefully at home on April 4. Janet was the wife of the late Berch Onanian and the daughter of the late Leonard and Alice (Gordon) Sorensen.

Janet was born in Newton and graduated from Newton North High School and Lasell College. She was a dental assistant and then a homemaker until the late 1970s. She spent many years in Newton as a traffic supervisor. She was a member of the United Parish of Auburndale Congregational Church in Newton. She and her husband lived in Newton and raised their family there until 1990, when they moved to Onset.

Janet loved being a hockey mom to three boys. She was very devoted to her boys, spending many hours at ice rinks. Janet also loved spending time at the sewing machine, making all types of clothing for her family. She enjoyed cooking, baking, knitting, arts and crafts and was a regular participant in many weekly card playing groups. Janet also enjoyed gardening, boating and was an avid beachgoer. One of her favorite pastimes was going to the beach each summer day in Onset with her friends, and then watching the sunset from her porch. Janet spent 19 winters at Grand Shores West in North Reddington Beach, Florida, where she enjoyed spending time with friends, social event planning, and card playing.

She is survived by her son, Scott Onanian and his wife Kelly of Onset. She was the grandmother of Scott, Nicole, Lauren, Jayson and Casey, and the great grandmother of Ashton, Maverick and Skylar. She is also survived by many loving relatives and friends. She was the mother of the late Douglas and Dana Onanian.

Her funeral service will be held on Monday, April 9, at 11 a.m. in the Wareham Village Funeral Home, 5 Center St., Wareham. Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend. Visiting hours will be from 10 to 11 a.m. prior to the service. Burial will follow in Newton Cemetery at 1 p.m., 791 Walnut St., Newton Center, in Newton.
