An off-duty Wareham Police officer helped stop a New Bedford from allegedly stealing a television from Walmart.

Scott Mixon, 37, of New Bedford, was arrested on May 4 charged with shoplifting, third offense, after some impromptu detective work by Officer Aaron Pacheco.

Pacheco was out of uniform and shopping at Lowe’s when he noticed Mixon asking customers for a ride. Police said Pacheco sensed something was suspicious after seeing a television with a Walmart clearance tag in Mixon’s shopping cart. Pacheco told Mixon he would give him a ride after he bought something at Lowe’s.

While keeping an eye on Mixon, Pacheco called Walmart and confirmed the description of the suspect and the television. Both then left the store and Mixon became agitated saying they had to leave right away. At that point, Officers Zina Kelsch and Jon Verhaegen arrived and arrested Mixon.

Mixon was taken to the Wareham Police Department and will be arraigned in Wareham District Court.
