Despite wind and rain, the Friends of Wareham Free Library held their annual duck race at the A.D. Makepeace Company on Sunday.

Duck racers of all ages came clad with rain boots and umbrellas. They lined up along the edges of the Tihonet Pond Canal, holding their breath and hoping to catch a familiar trace of yellow.

Among them was 12 year-old Reina Ulloa of Wareham, who was racing to remember her late grandfather.

“He always used to talk about bringing her to a race,” said Renee Ulloa, Reina’s mom. “So today, we’re doing this to remember him.”

Both Reina and her mom entered ducks in Sunday’s race and came in third place. The two wore red T-shirts with pictures of Reina’s grandfather on them.

“It would mean a lot for him to see us here,” Ulloa said.

The Friends of Wareham Free Library host the duck race each year as a fundraiser with live music, games, and even a duck decorating contest for the kids.

“It’s a great opportunity to get the community together,” said children’s librarian Marcia Hickey. “Even when the weather isn’t so great.”
