Wareham was awarded a federally funded Community Development Block Grant worth $825,000 by the Baker-Polito Administration on Thursday, July 26.

The grant comes as part of a $32 million plan to support 41 projects across 59 Massachusetts communities.

“Massachusetts cities and towns have unique needs," said Gov. Charlie Baker. "Our administration continues to partner with municipalities to ensure they can access the most effective resources, including federal grant programs."

The Community Development Block Grant is a competitive grant program designed to help small towns meet a wide range of community development needs.

Assistance is provided to qualifying towns for housing, community and economic development projects that will assist low and moderate income residents or revitalize areas of blight.

In a recent survey, Wareham Community and Economic Development Authority Manager Peter Sanborn revealed that 33 percent of properties in Wareham's downtown area are blighted. The minimum percentage needed for state assistance is 25.

According to Senate President Pro Tempore Marc Pacheco, Wareham intends to use the Community Development Block Grant to repair and renovate 12 units of community-run housing at Redwood Park.

The grant will also support the Boys & Girls Club, low-income transportation subsidies, Damien’s Place food pantry and homelessness prevention services.

“I am very pleased that the Town of Wareham was able to earn this grant and excited to see what it can help the town accomplish,” Pacheco said.
