Updated Monday: No injuries in Hiawatha Road house fire
No one was injured in a two-alarm house fire at 11 Hiawatha Road in the Indian Heights neighborhood, which occurred shortly after 2 p.m. on Sunday, July 23.
The fire started in the basement of the home. The cause is still being investigated by the Onset Fire Department and the Massachusetts State Police, according to Onset Fire Captain Howard Andersen.
"The fire was quickly extinguished, but there was smoke damage throughout the building," Andersen said.
In addition to Onset, the Wareham and Bourne fire departments responded to the scene. Andersen said a second alarm was called for additional manpower due to the hot weather.
"With the heat of the fire and all the gear that we wear, it can be enough on its own. You throw the hot weather in, [and] it takes a toll on the firefighters really quickly," Andersen said.
The home was occupied at the time of the fire, though no one was home, said Andersen. The home is currently uninhabitable.
