Anthony J. Nigro, Jr., 81, of Wareham died July 29 in Rhode Island Hospital, Providence. He was the husband of Margaret M. (Robinson) Nigro and the son of the late Anthony J. & Lucy (D’Ambrosio) Nigro.

He was born in Philadelphia, PA. He lived in Wareham for many years.

Mr. Nigro served in the U.S. Coast Guard for 24 years; he was stationed throughout the world. He retired as a Lieutenant Commander in 1972 while at the USCG Station Boston. After retiring, he worked as a Claims Manager at the Hartford Steam Boiler Insurance Company. He was still working until the time of his death.

A devoted member of the Kingdom Hall Jehovah Witnesses in Wareham, he loved doing field work going door-to-door preaching.

Mr. Nigro enjoyed working in his garden and watching others help him tend to his beds.

Survivors include his widow; a son, Anthony J. Nigro, III of West Wareham; a daughter, Angela M. Rodrigues of Swansea; a sister, Marion Tomczak of Philadelphia; 5 grandchildren: Stefano, Sabrina, and Sheba Nigro, Brittany and Colby Rodrigues; his aunt, Louise Mirto and her children of Glenside, PA; several nephews and nieces, including Frank & Matthew Tomczak.

His funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, August 4, 2011 at the Chapman, Cole & Gleason Funeral Home, 2599 Cranberry Hwy., Wareham. Burial will follow in the Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne.
