Wareham officials recover additional animal traps with help from Good Samaritan

Jan 23, 2019

Less than a week after officers from the Wareham Department of Natural Resources removed a batch illegal snare traps from animal trails in town, more snares and a leg hold trap were recovered from the woods along the Onset Water District’s well field.

The traps were given to the department by a Good Samaritan on Jan. 23 who said he found equipment a few month earlier while walking his dogs. The man’s identity was not released.

According to a Facebook post from the department, both of the man’s dogs had set off the traps and one sustained injuries to its foot as a result.

Natural Resource Officers said they followed up at the location to search for additional traps and were unable to find any.

“We are confident this is not recent illegal hunting activity taking place but we ask if you are walking your pets in the area to use caution,” officials said. “We would also like to stress these traps are not being set by a professional licensed trapper.”

Anyone who may have located illegal hunting gear should call the Wareham Department of Natural Resources at 508-291-3100 ext. 3180 or the Massachusetts Environmental Police at 800-632-8075.
