Westfield project receives little interest from developers

After receiving interest from only one developer, the Board of Selectmen Tuesday granted more time for developers to vie for a contract to construct senior affordable housing on the Westfield property in West Wareham.

Town Administrator Mark Andrews said he and the Westfield RFP Review and Recommendation Committee are working with the town's Community & Economic Development Authority (CEDA) to devise strategies to attract more bidders.

In February, the Board of Selectmen appointed volunteers to the Westfield RFP Review and Recommendation Committee. The committee is charged with making suggestions to the Selectmen for a request for proposal, or RFP, for the construction of the housing project.

The committee was supposed to submit suggestions to Andrews and the Board of Selectmen on April 1. After several delays, the proposal was put out to bid in early August. Bidding was slated to close in early September, according to Andrews.

With the project receiving little interest from developers, Andrews recommended the board extend the closing deadline to November 10 to allow time for more contractors to place offers.

Selectmen Walter Cruz, Ellen Begley, and Steve Holmes voted in favor of the extension. Selectman Cara Winslow opposed. Selectman Michael Schneider was not in attendance.
