Power restoration continues, residents urged to stay away from downed lines
NSTAR has restored power to most its Wareham customers. On Wednesday morning, about 12 percent of NSTAR customers in Wareham remained without power.
The company estimated the town's power will be fully restored by Saturday, September 3 at 10 p.m.
NSTAR reports 84,000 customers state-wide are still without power due to Tropical Storm Irene, which barreled through the region on Sunday, downing trees and power lines.
NSTAR crews are working around the clock to return service to the area. Residents are urged not to go near any downed utility lines as they could still be "live" wires.
A representative from NSTAR said the storm dealt a "massive blow" to service and said that it may take several days for power to be restored.
Wareham's emergency management staffers are relaying information about downed lines and are working closely with the company, according to Town Administrator Mark Andrews.
A number of traffic lights around town remained without power Tuesday morning. Andrews said the first priority is restoring power to the town's traffic lights.
Power was restored to the traffic lights on Cranberry Highway just after 12 a.m. on Tuesday, according to Wareham Police Lt. Kevin Walsh. Walsh cautions motorists to stay alert while driving on Cranberry Highway as power is still spotty in that area.
The traffic light at the intersection of Sandwich Road and Minot Ave. is still without power as of Tuesday afternoon.
Andrews said emergency officials are currently surveying the damage and beginning the clean-up process.
About 100 town employees and volunteers have been working since Friday night in preparation of the storm.
"Everyone chipped in... It was a good response to a bad situation," Andrews said.
The town's hurricane shelter was closed on the morning of Monday, August 29 after housing and feeding nearly 30 people during the storm.
Police and firefighters responded to dozens of reports of trees blocking roads and taking down power lines throughout the day on Sunday.
Despite the widespread damage there were no reports of any injuries, Andrews said.
Any residents without water due to the storm can visit the Wareham Fire Department at 273 Main Street. Water will be available Monday evening.
Residents can dial 211 to obtain information about shelters and other hurricane-related issues.
