Selectmen appoint several to boards and committees

The Board of Selectmen Tuesday interviewed members and approved appointments to vacant positions on the Board of Health, the Clean Water Committee, the Zoning Board of Appeals, the Library Board of Trustees and the Council on Aging.

Wareham’s Board of Health has had two vacancies for weeks after resignations of Dr. Thomas Gleason and Diane Allen.

Glenn Monteiro, who has experience in the health field, was approved for one position, but the appointment for the second vacancy was put on hold due to a request for clarification as to whether a physician is required to serve on the board.

Associate, non-voting Board of Health members Robert Brady and Frank DeFelice, who were appointed to the board in August, did not receive the appropriate votes from the Selectmen to be appointed as full members.

Selectmen Chair Walter Cruz was adamant there had always been someone with medical experience on the Board of Health and requested that the town administrator provide confirmation.

“We’ve always had a physician on the board,” Cruz said. “We do need a physician to apply for the Board of Health so if there are any out there that are interested, then please put it out.”

Selectman Cara Winslow commented that state guidelines “suggests and encourages us to find a physician,” but it appears that there is no firm directive for a town to do so, although it is a mandatory requirement for a city.

Filling the other vacancies was relatively straightforward with George Hempel and Janet Jones appointed to the Clean Water Committee, Michael Johnson joining the Zoning Board of Appeals, Liz McDonald and Meghan Singleton appointed to the Library Board of Trustees, and Kathleen Moore Minkle appointed as an Associate Member to the Council on Aging Board of Directors.
