Vikings hockey plays against a "tough team"
Despite opening season with a win last week, the Wareham boys hockey team lost their second game on Wednesday against Dennis-Yarmouth Regional with a final score of 3-6.
“We played against a tough team today,” said Wareham boys hockey coach Rich Valatkievicz.
Valatkievicz noted that Dennis-Yarmouth has the advantage of playing “three strong lines” whereas Wareham’s team “only played two lines.” The third line is often played against an opponent’s first or second lines in an effort to reduce their scoring, and physically wear them down.
Too many turnovers also weakened Vikings’ game, said Valatkievicz, explaining that the team often loses control of the puck to the opponent. Nevertheless, neither side had an easy game on Wednesday, with Dennis-Yarmouth having 36 shots on the goal and Wareham 35.
“Even though the score doesn’t show it, it was a good game,” said Valatkievicz. “We made a few mistakes and too many turnovers, but I think overall we played well.”
The Vikings’ next game will be against Seekonk at the New England Sports Village in Attleboro at 5 p.m. on Dec. 21.
