High-speed action at the Pinewood Derby

Feb 29, 2020

Boy Scouts competed in high speed races at the St. Patrick’s Church Hall on Saturday morning in the annual Pinewood Derby.

The wooden cars, decked out with fancy paint, stickers, and other decorations, zoomed down a wooden track at speeds up to 200 miles per hour.

The race, held by Pack 39, included 28 Scouts in kindergarten through fifth grade and seven siblings.

Scout Leader Kelly Buckingham said that the scouts crafted their cars beginning with a block of wood. From there, they designed what they wanted the cars to look like and used tools to shape them before sanding, painting, decorating, and adding the wheels and axels.

The race was composed of a number of three-car heats. Each car raced at least three times, once in each lane, and the cars were ranked by their average speed.

The first-place winner was Carter Westberg, whose car had an average speed of 202.97 miles per hour. Coming in second was Brady Brundage with an average speed of 200.07 miles per hour, and the third place finisher was Jared Faria with an average speed of 199.13 miles per hour.

Brady had designed his car to be a fire truck, inspired by his father Eddie Brundage, who is a Scout Leader and Wareham firefighter. The six-year-old said he decorated his truck with stickers, spray paint, and regular paint, and was very excited by his second-place finish.

Carter Westberg, age 6 ½, came in first place despite some trouble with a wheel that popped off after the races. His car was striped with blue, brown, and yellow.

Seven-year-old twins Alex and Hailey Wingo were thrilled to be competing in the derby for the first time.

“I had a mermaid car and won first place two times,” said Alex. Her favorite part of the day was when her car went fast.

Hailey also had a fantastical car.

“It’s a dragon! It has a tail,” she said.

The top five finishers will move on to compete in a regional competition in Rochester on March 21.
