Elks Club hosts belated Flag Day ceremony
Sep 12, 2020
The Elks Club held a belated Flag Day ceremony on Friday, September 11.
The Elks are the only fraternal order mandated to honor Flag Day, but the coronavirus pandemic made a celebration closer to the holiday in June impossible.
Instead, they held a socially-distanced ceremony outside the Lodge on Cranberry Highway, including several readings and short lesson on the history of all the flags flown in the states from colonial days to the present – presented by Cadets from the Massachusetts Maritime Academy.
Elks members also discussed the significance of the flag, which they described as an emblem of freedom, brotherly love, fidelity, and justice for all.
The Wareham Fire Department also proudly displayed a large flag from a ladder truck.
