UPDATE: Woman cited in Sandwich Road collision
Two people were injured when a black sedan collided with a tan pick-up truck at the intersection of Sandwich Road and Cranberry Highway just before 12 p.m. on Thursday, December 1.
Firefighters used Jaws of Life tools to extricate the female driver of the sedan from her vehicle. Wareham Police Lieutenant Kevin Walsh said the woman, identified as Amber Salgado of Middleborough, was transported to Tobey Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Salgado was traveling on Cranberry Highway toward Depot Street when witnesses said she ran a red light, according to Walsh. The driver of the pick-up, identified as Jesse Campinha of East Wareham, was crossing the intersection at Sandwich Road heading toward Wareham Center and struck the driver's side of Salgado's vehicle.
Salgado received a citation for running the red light, Walsh said.
Campinha was transported to Tobey Hospital with an injury to his wrist.
"This is a dangerous intersection," said a woman at the scene who identified herself as the niece of Campinha. "When there's an accident here, it's never a fender-bender."
Campinha's pick-up truck came to rest in the small island separating traffic turning right from Sandwich Road onto Cranberry Highway. The vehicle suffered heavy front-end damage.
The impact of the crash caused the sedan to face traffic turning right off of Sandwich Road. The driver's side was severely damaged, necessitating the use of the extrication tools.
The woman said her whole family lives in the neighborhood around Sandwich Road and that crashes are frequent in the area.
"I heard a bump and I said, 'There's another accident,'" she explained. "We hear them all the time."
Wareham Fire and Onset Fire responded to the scene. The injured parties were treated by Wareham EMS.
Traffic was backed up on both Sandwich Road and Cranberry Highway.
