By the numbers: Wareham High School fall sports

Wareham High School just wrapped up the 2011 fall sports season, and in a December 7 presentation to the School Committee, Athletic Director Marc Loranger shared some numbers you don't often hear during games.

Here is a recap of Wareham High School fall sports... by numbers other than scores!

 

Wareham athletics overall:

237 - The number of athletes who participated in fall sports in 2011.

205 - The number of athletes who participated in fall sports in 2010.

32 - The increase of this year's participating athletes over last year's.

85% - The average GPA of the fall athletes.

9 - The number of schools, including Wareham, in the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA) South Coast Conference. The others are: Apponequet Regional High School, Bourne High School, Case High School, Dighton-Rehoboth Regional High School, Fairhaven High School, Greater New Bedford Regional Vocational Technical High School, Old Rochester Regional High School, and Seekonk High School.

 

Cheerleading:

22 - The number of athletes who participate in cheerleading.

85.86% - The team's average GPA.

1 - The number of team-members winning a South Coast Conference Sportsmanship award. The award was earned by Brittney St. Germaine.

3 - The number of hours each of the cheerleaders donated to Pop Warner cheerleading teams.

 

Boys and girls cross country:

17 - The number of cross country athletes.

84% - The cross country team's average GPA.

1 - The number of cross country team-members taking home a South Coast Conference Sportsmanship award. It was won by Paige Vespa.

 

Field hockey:

22 - Number of players on the field hockey team.

87.5% - The field hockey team's average GPA.

1 - The number of field hockey players awarded a South Coast Conference honorable mention. Rachel Bonfiglio was awarded.

1 - The number of field hockey players garnering a South Coast Conference Sportsmanship award. The award went to Kate Modlowski.

 

Football:

69 - Number of athletes on the football team.

78.2% - The football team's average GPA.

3 - Number of football players named South Coast Conference All Stars. They are Anthony Abbott, Darien Fernandez, and Josh Simmons.

2 - The number of football players who received a South Coast Conference honorable mention. They are Angel Rodriguez and Owen Braley.

1 - The number of football players who received South Coast Conference Sportsmanship award. Billy Peterson garnered that one.

2 - The number of community service projects the team completed. Football players helped out with the Dick Melloni Youth Foundation holiday toy drive and read to elementary school students.

2 - The number of days Athletic Director Marc Loranger says his 8-year-old son, Anthony, would not talk to him after Loranger and Wareham High School Principal Scott Palladino attempted to get the boy to wear a Vikings jersey during the Thanksgiving football game against Bourne.

Loranger joked that Anthony is having a tough time with his dad's transition from Plymouth South High School to Wareham. "I told him the viking is better than the panther," Loranger told the School Committee. "He didn't talk to me for like two days!"

 

Golf:

12 - The number of Wareham High School golfers.

88.91% - The average GPA of the golf team.

2 - The number players garnering a South Coast Conference honorable mention. They are Matt Crocker and Kevin McCarthy.

1 - The number of golfers getting a South Coast Conference Sportsmanship award. Dennis Silva took that home.

1 - The number days the golf team spent clearing debris from the Bay Pointe Country Club driving range after Tropical Storm Irene.

 

Boys soccer:

34 - Number of boys soccer players.

80.51% - The team's average GPA.

1 - The number of players named to the list of South Coast Conference All Stars. Nick Cleveland got that award.

2 - The number of players receiving a South Coast Conference honorable mention. They are Ryan Sanderson and Ed Colp.

1 - The number of players receiving a South Coast Conference Sportsmanship award. Nick Cleveland also took that award home.

Many Saturdays - The number of days the players spent coaching youth soccer players and volunteering as referees.

 

Girls soccer:

29 - Number of athletes on the girls soccer team.

86.6% - The average GPA of the girls soccer team.

1 - The number of players named South Coast Conference All Stars. Tara DiGiantomaso was awarded.

2 - The number of players receiving South Coast Conference honorable mentions. They are Nicole Torraco and Madison Catarius.

1 - The number of girls soccer players taking home a South Coast Conference Sportsmanship award. Isabel Scannell took that home.

200 - The number of pairs of sneakers that the team collected as part of the Nike Reuse-A-Shoe drive. The shoes are recycled and used to create playgrounds.

U-8, U-12 - The youth soccer teams that the girls helped coach on Saturdays.

 

Girls volleyball:

32 - The number of players on the volleyball team.

85.6% - The volleyball team's average GPA.

2 - The number of volleyball players named South Coast Conference All Stars. They are Jaimie Beauchemin and Rebecca Holmes.

2 - The number of players receiving South Coast Conference honorable mentions. They are Hailie Prien and Alissa Jenney.

1 - The number of players garnering a South Coast Conference Sportsmanship award. The award went to Tiffany Marquez.

 

Other fun facts:

0 - The number of athletes and coaches who received South Coast Conference disciplinary action during the 2011 season. Wareham High School received an MIAA Sportsmanship honorable mention award.

The Wareham High School girls volleyball team had its best season in years and made the state tournament, Loranger wrote in his report.

The cheerleading team had its best season ever, placing second in the South Coast Conference Championship meet.

The field hockey team took home the South Coast Conference Sportsmanship award.

The boys and girls cross country team completed a canned food drive from Damien's Place food pantry to help local families.

The girls volleyball team wore pink wristbands and held a fundraiser for cancer research in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Also in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the field hockey team wore old pink uniforms to one of their games and raised money for cancer research.
