Warm for the holidays
Thanks to a generous benefactor, Ann Marie Rita got her Christmas wish.
On Christmas Eve day, a Wareham Week reader stepped up and helped Rita, who is homeless, get a room at the Atlantic Motel in Wareham. She was a little nervous at first, but after she was checked in, she seemed excited that she could perhaps have her daughter and grandchildren visit her on Christmas.
“I’ve seen her walking along the road as I drive to work,” said the man who donated the money to secure the room. He asked to remain anonymous. “I always wanted to stop and help her but I didn’t.”
Rita was profiled in Wareham Week last week for her efforts to bring cheer to children passing by the Glen Charlie Road bridge. She designed Christmas wreaths and displayed them on the bridge.
She told Wareham Week that she’d like to be “in” for Christmas, maybe in a motel, maybe for a week, but that there wasn’t money for it. Outreach workers came by and promised her that, but never came back, she said.
The man said he had ski clothes that he thought would fit her for the cold months, but helping her get a room for the holidays worked just as well.
