Although the Onset Cape Verdean Festival will not be held this year, the association behind the event has awarded eight outstanding high school seniors scholarships of $1,000 each. 

Lynn Spinola, a member of the association, said that the scholarships were well deserved, and wished the students the best of luck in the next chapter of their lives. 

The 2021 recipients are:

• Grace Brogioli of Wareham High School, who will attend Fairfield University
• James Fitzgerald of Wareham High School, who will attend the University of Vermont
• Adreanna Dillen of Wareham High School, who will attend Harvard University
• Reign Fernandes of Old Rochester Regional, who will attend Suffolk University
• Kennedy Johnson of New Bedford High School, who will attend Bristol Community College
• Jayden Nascimento of Upper Cape Cod Regional Technical High School, who will be attending the Wentworth Institute of Technology
• Sydney Uhlman of Sturgis Charter High School, who will be attending UMass Boston
• Mariah Choung of Plymouth North High School, who will attend UMass Amherst
