School bus rear-ended on Marion Road

Feb 3, 2012

A Wareham school bus was rear-ended by a sedan on Marion Road at approximately 2:30 p.m. on Friday, February 3. The driver of the car was cited in the incident.

One student was taken to Tobey Hospital "to be checked out," said Wareham Fire Captain Mark Rogers, adding that "nobody was seriously injured."

In a statement released by Superintendent Dr. Barry Rabinovitch, Rabinovitch wrote that "[t]hough no one claimed to be hurt," the student was transported by Wareham EMS to the hospital.

According to a statement released by Wareham Police, the bus was occupied by a 17-year-old male student who was transported to the hospital "due to a complaint of neck pain."

Rabinovitch said the district released the details known at the time of the accident. He clarified via e-mail: "I have been told the Wareham Police have added to their press release the student was transported to Tobey Hospital because of an injury. EMS at the scene said he was transported because he is a minor. He is experiencing some pain as an aftermath of the accident."

The bus involved was "B26." It is one of the district's smaller buses.

The car, a 2002 Dodge Neon, struck the bus while the bus was stopped and waiting to make a left-hand turn onto Viking Drive, according to police.

The driver of the car, identified as 18-year-old Drew Sylvia of East Wareham, was issued a citation for operating within 100 feet of a school bus, according to police.

The car sustained extensive front-end damage and was towed from the scene.

Rabinovitch wrote that the bus "was returning to pick up a Wareham High School student."

The rear bumper of the bus was damaged, police said. After the bus was cleared by police, it resumed its last run of the day, according to Rabinovtich.

Wareham Police, Wareham EMS, and Wareham Fire all responded to the accident.

It was the second time in a week that a school bus was involved in an accident. On January 27, a vehicle backed into a stopped school bus on Viking Drive.
