Early morning fire at Silver Lake Motel considered suspicious
No one was injured in a two-alarm fire that broke out just before 3 a.m. at the Silver Lake Motel on Saturday, February 18, but investigators are considering the blaze to be suspicious.
The fire damaged one of the two buildings at the 3026 Cranberry Highway motel, located in East Wareham.
Firefighters who were first on the scene found smoke coming from a basement storage area, "with fire spreading quickly under the building," according to a press release issued by the Onset Fire Department.
The Onset Fire Department, Wareham Police, and state Fire Marshal's office are investigating the cause of the blaze. Preliminary findings indicate that "the fire is suspicious in nature and was possibly set intentionally," according to the release.
"I have no idea how this happened," Jeyesh Patel, manager of the motel, said Saturday afternoon as he worked inside the damaged building.
Patel, who still hadn't left the property since arriving at the fire early Saturday, said he believed a woman lived in the room that was heavily damaged and that her son was visiting.
"Thank God nobody got hurt," Patel said. "And thank God it only damaged one room."
Though the damage was contained, the residents staying in the building could not return to the their rooms. Twelve people were displaced. The Cape Cod chapter of the Red Cross is assisting those residents.
"Some people have to leave because we don't have enough room," Patel said, but added that some were moved into the motel's other building.
It took 55 firefighters approximately 45 minutes to knock down the fire, with some staying at the scene for an additional hour to extinguish "hot spots."
Patel said he was grateful for the the emergency responders' efforts.
"They really did a good job," he said. "A really good job."
Investigators are asking anyone with information regarding the fire to contact the Onset Fire Department at 508-295-2122, the Wareham Police Department at 508-295-1212, or the state Fire Marshal's office arson hotline at 1-800-682-9229.
Wareham Fire, Bourne Fire, and Wareham EMS assisted Onset Fire at the scene, while the Carver Fire Department provided station coverage at the Onset Fire headquarters.
