Children and families celebrated Dr. Seuss’ 108th birthday at the Wareham Free Library on Saturday, March 3, with a big party and a cake in honor of the beloved children’s book author of The Cat in the Hat and other favorites. Under the name Dr. Seuss, Theodore Seuss Geisel wrote a total of 45 books for children, including The Cat in the Hat, Green Eggs and Ham, The Lorax, How the Grinch Stole Christmas, and Hop on Pop.
Wearing a giant stovepipe hat like the one worn by the misbehaving Cat in the Hat, children’s librarian Marcia Hickey read Dr. Seuss stories to a well-behaved crowd. Dozens of child-sized red and white hats were laid out and ready for the young members of her audience to put on as they arrived and listened to stories read by Mrs. Hickey and her assistant, library staffer Juselena Scott.
After polishing off pieces of birthday cake, partygoers played games inspired by Dr. Seuss stories such as green egg spoon races and a Cat in the Hat ring toss.Teen volunteers Jasinia Lee and Alyxis Polisky painted Seuss-inspired designs on children’s faces.
Dr. Seuss’ birthday party was sponsored by the Friends of the Wareham Free Library.
