We are excited to share and celebrate the facilities achievements of Transforming A Legacy, the Lloyd Center’s multi-year Capital Campaign.  In 2015, Eric A. Braitmayer and Peter L. Macdonald, co-chairs of the campaign, wrote, 
 
If the Lloyd Center for the Environment is to continue to transform not only lives, but also the futures of our communities and our region, we must put our whole heart and best efforts into raising the necessary funds to renew and sustain our programs and campus: Our students, members and communities deserve no less.
 

Thanks to the encouragement and support of many, we raised more than the $3M Transforming A Legacy goal and will soon have completed three-quarters of the facilities objectives – the Teaching Pavilion on the Slocum River, the Bus Drop-Off, Parking and Roadway Improvements, and (soon) the Welcome Center. 

It has been a challenging process delayed by:

  • The two plus years of Covid restrictions;
  • The five years of high cost construction material increases and reduced availability;
  • The complexity of the requirements of the Living Building Challenge™;
  • And the necessary schedule restrictions of the students from the Greater New Bedford Regional Vocational Technical High School.

However, we have made great progress, which we look forward to sharing with you.

We want you to see what we have accomplished! We want to share the aspirations and improvements we have achieved during and after the extended focus on capital improvements. We want you to understand the quality and importance of our work. We want to reflect with you on the changes to the Lloyd Center inherent in the work we have collectively undertaken.

Through four dates for open Cold Brew and Construction Tours, we hope you will join us to visit especially the unique, innovative components of the 105% energy rejuvenating Welcome Center, the preliminary construction and plans for the main building, the campus upgrades, and the new Teaching Pavilion. This will also be an opportunity to ask the variety of questions that surround our projects:                          

  • What are “red list” chemicals?
  • What is a ‘public water supply” and why does it matter?
  • Why did the Center choose to have over 1,000 Voc-Tech students construct the building? At what costs?
  • How did the Center address the unavoidable program ad outreach choices that occurred because of the decision to build a state of the art, energy rejuvenating building at significant cost and time requirements?
  • How will these evolutions affect/enhance/change the LCE environmental education and research programs?
  • Where will the Center go next?

The Cold Brew and Construction Tour meetings (open to all) will occur:

            Tuesday, July 11th     8:00 am to 10:00 am

            Monday, July 31st      8:00 am to 10:00 am

            Wednesday. August 9th      8:00 am to 10:00 am

            Thursday, August 17th     8:00 am to 10:00 am
