Special Town Meeting postponed to May 23
Special Town Meeting was postponed to Wednesday, May 23 at 7 p.m. in the Wareham High School auditorium after being just shy of the 100 person quorum needed to conduct business on Monday.
A minimum of 100 voters are needed in order to conduct a Town Meeting, according to Town Moderator Claire Smith.
A count of the voters taken at just before 8 p.m. revealed that 96 voters were in attendance at the meeting, and a motion was passed to delay the meeting until Wednesday.
Though a minimum of 100 voters are needed to conduct a Town Meeting, a minimum of 150 voters are needed to vote on financial articles, explained Smith.
Because 15 of the 17 articles on the Special Town Meeting warrant are financial in nature, in reality, a quorum of 150 voters is needed on Wednesday to vote on a majority of the articles, explained Smith.
The Onset Fire District's annual meeting was also being held on May 21, beginning at 7:30 p.m. at the Dudley L. Brown VFW in Onset. Officials said that due to the district's bylaws, the meeting had to be scheduled for that specific date.
The town-wide Special Town Meeting was also scheduled for May 21 at 8 p.m. and according to law could not be changed once advertised to the public, said Smith during a Board of Selectmen meeting earlier in the month.
