Steve Carell movie brings Hollywood to Wareham

Jun 8, 2012

Hollywood will be back in Wareham this summer.

Sources tell Wareham Week that parts of Steve Carell's latest movie, "The Way Way Back," will be shot at an Onset business beginning in July.

"The Way Way Back," which also stars Toni Collette, tells the story of a teenager who, while on summer vacation, learns to stand up to his alcoholic stepfather and repairs his relationship with his mother. It is scheduled to be released in 2013.

A casting call will be held in Boston this weekend for members of the SAG-AFTRA union. Wareham Week could not confirm whether an open casting call would be held nearby.

Shooting will also take place in Marshfield, Mass., where Carell and his family own a home. (The Massachusetts native and his wife, Nancy, also own the Marshfield Hills General Store, which they purchased in 2009 in an effort to preserve the landmark.)

Carell is famous for his role as Dunder Mifflin boss Michael Scott on the NBC comedy, "The Office," and has had numerous movie roles. He starred in "The 40 Year Old Virgin" and, more recently, was the voice of Gru in "Despicable Me."

Carell and Collette were also on-screen together in 2006's "Little Miss Sunshine."

"The Way Way Back" will be the first Hollywood movie to shoot in Wareham since Adam Sandler's "Grown Ups" took over Water Wizz in August, 2009.
