Superintendent takes Selectmen to task for 'sarcastic tone'
Wareham Public Schools Superintendent Barry Rabinovitch last week fired back at Selectmen for their "sarcastic tone" and at Town Administrator Mark Andrews for "misrepresenting the facts" at the March 30 Selectmen's meeting.
In an April 1 letter to the editor sent to multiple newspapers, Rabinovitch responded to the Selectmen's agreement to help citizen activist Ellen Begley obtain documents about school bus maintenance.
Begley came before Selectmen during the "citizens' participation" portion of their meeting to ask for their assistance after the School Department declined to waive the fees associated with her request.
If a town committee or board requests the documents, a fee is not charged. So the Board voted to request the documents from the School Department for Begley.
"My personal opinion is, of course we should make the request, and when we're refused too, we'll take appropriate action as a board," Board of Selectmen Chairman Bruce Sauvageau said.
At the meeting, Andrews said that he had asked Rabinovitch to give him the requested documents.
"The facts are that Mrs. Begley filed a request to Mr. Andrews, he forwarded her request to my office, and I wrote Mrs. Begley a letter with estimated costs," Rabinovitch wrote.
Andrews maintains that the documents should have been provided to him. "[The request] came from my office," he said in a phone call. "My intention was to help Mrs. Begley get this information that she'd been requesting."
Rabinovitch ended his letter: "Why did the Town Administrator misrepresent the facts and why was this issue handled in the manner it was can only be speculated on. However, April 6th is fast approaching and the citizens of Wareham have a critical choice to make. Sarcasm or integrity, it's your choice."
