SEMAP announces new local food educational offerings

The Southeastern Massachusetts Agricultural Partnership (SEMAP) offers community education and technical assistance covering a variety of local food topics for eaters and growers.

July 31 - Local Food 101 with Bob Bailey at the Old Methodist Meeting House - Free

Covering the why, where, and how of local food in southeastern Massachusetts.

At this seminar, learn about the benefits of local food for your health, the environment, and the local economy. Also find out where to find local food, and what to do with it once you’ve got it.

This educational seminar is funded through a grant from the Makepeace Neighborhood Fund.

August 11 - Tomato Canning Adventure with Rosa Galeno at the First Congregational Church, Fellowship Hall - $25 per student, $20 for SEMAP members.

Part of SEMAP’s Sustainable Table Workshop Series, students will visually see the method of canning and how to time properly.

Each student will receive a packet explaining in full detail the method and process of heirloom canning with recipes, and three jars of tomatoes to take home and process.

Lunch is included and will showcase 'Pizza Rustica' using heirloom canned tomatoes, lemon water, and fresh piped cannolis for desert. This course is supported by a grant from the Makepeace Neighborhood Fund.

September 15 - 2nd Annual Bog Jog & Veggie Stampede

Connecting local food with a healthy activity!

Learn about local food and meet local farmers during and after this 5k trail run through the A.D. Makepeace Company’s property and bogs in Wareham.

Run through wooded trails, break out of the dense forest into sunshine, run around a bog and then jog back into the tree-covered trail.

Walkers are welcome. New this year will be a Veggie Stampede for kids.

A short-distance run on the grass for children ages 4 to 9. Everyone gets a super cool T-shirt and tote. All children receive awards. Celebrate with local food and drink at the finish!

SEMAP believes that local agriculture is essential to the health and vitality of our community and our economy. Sustaining farmers and farm businesses, and expanding access to local food are at the core of its mission.

SEMAP provides technical assistance to farmers, educate the community on the importance of local agriculture, work to increase the functionality of our region’s food system, and connect all people to local food.
