Fourth grade students performed songs about snow and sledding down a slippery slope in the music department's annual Winter concert.

The concert was held Thursday, Feb. 6 at the elementary school and it featured performances from the school's fourth grade band and chorus. Russ Hart, a music teacher and director of the band and chorus said the concert went well.

"We had a good time and the students had fun," said Hart.

Kemper Merrick plays clarinet in the band and she said that she had fun during the concert performing with her friends.

Cameron Fernandez sang in the choir and he also thought the concert went well.

"I felt so good singing and I like dancing and it's great," said Cameron Fernandez.

Cameron's mom Carolina Fernandez watched her son perform and she said this is his first year at Wareham Elementary School. She added that joining the chorus has been good for him.

"It's been a wonderful experience and my son jumped right in," she said.

Hart said this is the first time any of these kids have performed music in a concert before and it gives them a unique experience.

"Performing with the sound crew and microphones is a different vibe for the kids," said Hart. "It gives them a unique opportunity to learn and grow."

The band and the chorus each performed five songs and both groups focused on a winter theme for the concert.

Hart said he wants to help introduce kids to new kinds of music and many of the songs performed by the chorus were set to classics like Elvis Presly's "Jailhouse Rock" and Billy Joel's "We Didn't Start the Fire" with the lyrics changed to match the winter theme.

"Kids might nor gravitate to an Elvis or a jazzy type of song or a slower ballad unless they are guided to it," said Hart.
