Wareham resident charged with fifth OUI
Wareham resident Michael Wurtzburger was arrested on Tuesday and charged for the fifth time with operating a vehicle under the influence of alcohol, according to police.
Wareham police said they received a call about an intoxicated driver on Cranberry Highway in East Wareham at approximately 7:30 p.m. on August 14.
Officers located the vehicle in the area of Tyler Avenue and administered a series of sobriety tests to Wurtzburger, 48, police said. He reportedly failed them all.
Further investigation revealed that Wurtzburger had previously had his driver's license permanently revoked for operating under the influence and for being an "Habitual Traffic Offender," police said.
Wurtzburger's most recent OUI charge was in 2004, police said.
Michael Wurtzburger was held overnight at the Wareham Police Department and arraigned in Wareham District Court the next day on charges of operating under the influence of liquor, fifth offense, and operating after revocation for operating under the influence of alcohol, police said.
Police Chief Richard Stanley praised officers Eric Machado and James White for their diligence in locating and arresting Wurtzburger.
The arrest comes one day before the start of the statewide “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” initiative targeting drunk drivers. For more on that initiative, chick here.
