Victims identified in mobile home fire that left one dead, another injured

Jean Drew, 88, is dead and her son Richard Drew, 56, is in critical condition after their mobile home caught fire Friday, April 11.
The Fire Department received calls beginning at 8:40 p.m. for the fire at 102 Kimberly Court and on arrival, firefighters found the home in flames. Richard Drew had managed to get out but Jean Drew remained inside the home. Officials pronounced her dead at the scene.
Emergency Medical Service workers transported Richard Drew to a hospital in Boston and his sister Nancy Drew said his lungs are damaged and he is in need of skin grafts.
“It's going to be a long road, hopefully he pulls through,” Nancy Drew said of her brother.
The cause and origin of the incident is still under investigation by several agencies including State Police fire investigators and detectives. One firefighter was injured during the response and taken to Tobey Hospital for treatment.
Firefighters beat down the blaze in about 30 minutes and according to the State Fire Marshal, “protected nearby trailers from the growing flames.” One adjacent structure sustained radiant heat damage.
The flames severely damaged most of the home and left the windows broken and most of the roof destroyed.
The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner has yet to determine the cause and manner of Jean Drew’s death.
Neighbors reported seeing smoke and the building engulfed in flames. One nearby resident said he heard an explosion that sounded like a “car wreck.”
Jean Drew, a mother to 11 children and avid fan of shows like "Unsolved Mysteries," had lived with Richard Drew in their home for over 20 years, Nancy Drew said. She added that over the years, her mother had worked at the Little Harbour Golf Course, Sand and Surf and spent many years as a nanny.
This is the second fire in under a month that has occurred on Kimberly Court. The first was on March 20 which firefighters contained to a single room in a house. No injuries were reported.
“On behalf of the Wareham Fire Department, I want to express our heartfelt condolences to the family that lost a loved one and a home last night,” said Wareham Assistant Fire Chief PatrickHaskell. “This is a terrible tragedy for them and our community.”
Wareham firefighters were assisted at the scene by the Marion and Onset Fire Departments, Wareham Police and Wareham EMS. Massachusetts Department of Fire Services and The Special Signal Fire Association provided rehab services to members. Later, the Plymouth County Technical Rescue team was summoned to assist with securing the property.
