A quackin’ good time for the library

Several rubber ducks were seen swimming in a slow speed race down a stream to support the Wareham Free Library.

The annual rubber duck race to support the Wareham Free Library was held Sunday, May 18 at A.D. Makepeace where dozens of people painted rubber ducks to race down a stream.

Library director Patrick Marshall said the event has been going on for many years and this year, the water levels were low making that ducks look like they were floating in a lazy river.

“The ducks weren’t going as fast but I think we had more people this year which was nice," he said.

One of the many attendees was 9-year-old Abigail Chuckran of Wareham who was looking for her second duck race title.

“I won it two years ago so I wanted to try again,” Abigail said.

Each contestant in the race got to decorate rubber ducks to flow down the stream and Abigail hoped her cat inspired duck would out pace the others.

“I made one and put hashtag star on it because that’s my cat’s name,” she said.

While some were there for the race, Alissa Ellenwood of Fall River was there simply out of a love for rubber ducks.

“We have a lot of ducks in the house,” she said. “We have ducks from Lisbon, one from Florida and even one from Nashville.”

Ellenwood added she originally bought rubber ducks for her nephews but her 2-year-old son Callum has now inherited them.

“A duck sound was one of the first sounds he was able to make,” she said.

As the conclusion of the slow-speed race neared, one upside-down duck painted by Lainy Paras creeped past the others to take first place.
