Patricia M. McCarthy, 70, of Wareham and Crystal River, FL, died Sept. 23, at home after an illness. She was the daughter of the late Florence and Marion (Powers) McCarthy.

She was born in Boston, raised in Dorchester, and then lived in Swampscott for many years before moving to Crystal River eight years ago. She was a summer resident of Wareham for many years.

She graduated from St. Mark Elementary School in Dorchester, Mount Alvernia High School in Chestnut Hill, Stonehill College, class of 1963, and the University of New Mexico.

Ms. McCarthy worked as a probation officer for many years. She retired as Chief Probation Officer for Essex County.

She was a communicant of St. Patrick’s Church in Wareham and St. Benedict’s Church in Crystal River, FL.

Survivors include 3 sisters, Mary Gimbrone and her husband Michael of Jamaica Plain, Dianne Colleary and her husband William of Wareham, and Denise Richards of Fall River; 3 brothers, Kevin McCarthy and his wife Patricia of Portsmouth, RI, James McCarthy and his wife Carol of Wareham, and Thomas McCarthy of Beverly; her dear friend, William Mannix of Wareham. She is also survived by many nephews, nieces, four grand-nephews, a grand-niece, and her friends, Carol Kerrigan, Bobbi Keane, and Pat Corkery. She was the sister of the late John P. McCarthy.

Her Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, September 27, 2012 in St. Patrick’s Church, 82 High St., Wareham.
