WPD targeting drunk drivers this holiday season

The Wareham Police Department isn’t pulling any punches this holiday season when it comes to drunk driving.

Wareham Police will launch the “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over" initiative on December 12, and it will continue until January 1.

“Lots of folks will be out during this busy holiday season, enjoying themselves and the holiday festivities, and we want everyone to be safe on our roadways,” said Traffic Safety Officer Bryan Whalen.

The stepped-up enforcement efforts will specifically target people suspected of driving under the influence, according to police. There will be saturated patrols and aggressive traffic enforcement, police said.

“If you are caught drinking and driving impaired, you will be arrested," said Whalen. No warnings. No excuses."

Holiday festivities can make the roads a dangerous place to be when the party’s over and the partygoers get in their cars, police explained.

“No one ever thinks that their holiday celebration will end in jail, or worse, in a hospital or the morgue,” said Whalen.  “But for those who include alcohol in their celebrations and then get behind the wheel, this is often the case.”
