Resident honored for years of volunteering
She's volunteered for 34 years, donated more than 4,000 hours of her time, and last week, Yvonne Stone received the Presidential Lifetime of Service Award from Mayflower RSVP in recognition of all she's done for Wareham's seniors.
"I was speechless," Stone said. She is the president of the Friends of Wareham's Elderly and has worked with the Council on Aging. "My girlfriend said, 'Yvonne, you've never been speechless in your life.'"
Mayflower RSVP coordinates volunteer programs throughout Southeastern Massachusetts. An April 29 reception was held to honor reward recipients. Stone is a previous recipient of the award and said she thought she wasn't eligible to receive it again.
"I thought I was only going there as a guest," Stone said.
Stone was nominated for the award by Larry Gaines, who is the chairman of the Friends of Wareham's Elderly Board of Trustees.
After receiving the award nomination information from Mayflower RSVP, "I said, 'My God! I don't know anybody but her,'" to nominate, Gaines said. She "has all the qualifications of what I consider a solid leader."
Gaines said he met Stone three years ago when he got involved with the Friends of Wareham's Elderly. "I had a lot of exposure to the way that she is and what she does and how she feels about seniors," he said.
Stone was one of just 13 recipients of the award.
"Her attitude is very humble," Gaines said, but when she sees something that needs to be done, "she has the energy of a pit bull."
Stone said she gets just as much out of volunteering as she gives. "I just love doing it. I just love my people," she said. "To see them happy makes me happy."
