All papers are in for April 2 election
The April 2 town election ballot will feature candidates vying for two three-year seats on the Board of Selectmen and facing off for the Town Moderator position.
There are also three uncontested races for the Housing Authority, the Board of Assessors, and a one-year Board of Selectmen seat left vacant by the resignation of Ellen Begley.
According to the Town Clerk’s office, all but one set of papers were turned in by the Tuesday, Feb. 12 deadline. The only papers not turned in were those pulled by Frank DeFelice for a seat on the Board of Assessors.
DeFelice initially pulled papers to run for the Board of Assessors because, according to him, he did not want to see an incumbent run unopposed.
When newcomer Roxanne Barboza pulled papers for the Assessors seat, DeFelice decided to run for Selectmen, and threw his support behind Barboza.
"I said, 'Roxanne, just give me your papers and I’ll help you get them signed,'" said DeFelice.
Barboza is now running unopposed.
DeFelice is running against incumbents Steve Holmes and Cara Winslow, and former-Selectman Patrick Tropeano for one of two three-year seats on the board.
DeFelice expressed dissatisfaction with the incumbents.
"The things that go in front of the Selectmen … there’s no meat to the agenda. It’s Mickey Mouse stuff," said DeFelice.
DeFelice has run for Selectmen three times, and served several terms on the Board of Selectmen in Milton, N.H. He currently serves as a member of the Board of Health.
Running for the uncontested one-year Board of Selectmen term is former-Selectman Judith Whiteside, who served on the board in the early 1980s. At that time, her name was Judith Montminy.
In the race for Town Moderator, Bill Whitehouse is looking to unseat incumbent Claire Smith.
Also on the ballot, Rhonda Veugen is running unopposed for her second three-year term on the School Committee, and Robert Powilatis is seeking a five-year term on the Housing Authority.
Before moving to Wareham in 2010, Powilatis served on the Holbrook Board of Selectmen, Board of Assessors, and the Housing Authority.
