Learn about ospreys with the Land Trust and Mass. Audubon

Feb 26, 2013

When Wareham's summer residents return, so will the many endangered ospreys that make the town their summer home.

Want to learn about the "fish hawks" who return in spring and nest high above the waters where they fish?

The Wareham Land Trust and Mass. Audubon will host a free lecture entitled, "The Lives of South Coast Ospreys -- A View from Above," on March 9, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Wareham Free Library.

Mass. Audubon's Gina Purtell, Sanctuary Director of South Coast Sanctuaries, will present. Purtell has been involved in the Westport River and Allens Pond Sanctuary osprey projects. Together with research partners, her team of volunteers and sanctuary staff has maintained nearly 100 nest platforms, monitored breeding success, and studied the flight patterns of several individual ospreys during both migration and daily fishing forays.

Purtell will share slides and stories, describe the hows and whys of installing nest platforms, and discuss the animal's migration habits.

Save time for an afternoon field trip to learn about the role that you can play in the conservation of ospreys.

Pre-registration is not required. For more information, contact the Wareham Land Trust at 508-295-0211.
