Learn About Ospreys This Weekend!

Mar 6, 2013

Story Location:
59 Marion Rd.
Wareham, MA 02571
United States

A free lecture, “The Lives of South Coast Ospreys – A View from Above” co-sponsored by Wareham Land Trust and Mass. Audubon, will be offered on March 9 from 10:00 AM -12:00 PM at The Wareham Free Library with Mass. Audubon presenter Gina Purtell, Sanctuary Director of South Coast Sanctuaries.

Did you know that people aren’t the only summer residents of Wareham? Many ospreys, or “fish hawks” also make Wareham their summer home, nesting high above the waters where they fish. They return in March or April and a sure sign of spring is their loud “tweeting” from the skies.

Gina has been involved in the osprey project of the Westport River and Allens Pond Sanctuaries since 2004.  Together with world-renowned research partners, her team of volunteers and sanctuary staff has maintained nearly 100 nest platforms, monitored breeding success, and studied flight patterns of several individual ospreys during both migration and daily fishing forays.  In her talk, Gina will:

  • Share findings from this work with slides and stories;

  • Describe the how’s and why’s (or why nots) of installing nest platforms;

  • Discuss the amazing migration habits of ospreys;

Bonus! Save time for an afternoon field trip to learn about the role that you can play locally in the conservation of ospreys.

No pre-registration is required but please contact Wareham Land Trust, 508-295-0211, for more information.
