The Makepeace Neighborhood Fund has awarded a total of $115,000 in grants to 29 organizations located in Wareham and the surrounding areas.

"We're not able to service everyone, but we're lucky to be able to do what we do," Christopher Makepeace, chairman of the Board of Trustees for the fund, said during a ceremony for grantees at Tihonet Village Market on May 13.

The fund was established in 2004 to support nonprofits that provide services in areas where A.D. Makepeace owns land. It has awarded $960,000 in grants since its inception. It received 85 proposals requesting a total of $625,000 this year.

Some of the Wareham recipients included the Good Shepherd Food Pantry, Oak Grove Cape Verdean Cultural Center Association, Tobey Hospital, the Wareham Historical Society, Wareham Public Schools, and the Gleason Family YMCA.

Minot Forest Elementary received a $7,500 grant to purchase two SMART Boards, or interactive, computerized whiteboards, as well as two document cameras, which project documents and images onto a screen.

"We were extremely excited" about the grant, said Minot Forest Elementary Principal Joan Seamans, adding that teacher Pam Schluter worked very hard on the application. "When we can integrate technology, students love it, and it makes learning fun."
