James J. 'Cuckoo' McCarthy, 85

James J. “Cuckoo” McCarthy, 85, of Wareham, died March 5, in Massachusetts General Hospital. He was the husband of 56 years of Eleanor M. “Ellie” (Aiello) McCarthy and the son of the late James F. and Margaret M. Toomey McCarthy.

Mr. McCarthy was born in Boston and lived in Newton and Hyde Park for many years before moving to his summer home in Wareham in 1983.

He was a WWII Navy veteran and a truck driver for the Teamsters Union Local #25 for many years before retiring.

He was a member of the Cromesett Tribe Improved Order of the Redmen #156, and was a Past Great Sachem for the State Grand Council and a member of the American Legion Post 220.

Survivors include his sons, James J. McCarthy, Jr. of Canton and Kevin M. McCarthy of Wareham; 3 sisters, Margaret Bergin of Mendon, Maureen Welch of Port Richie, FL and Catherine O’Riley of Watertown; 5 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren. He was the brother of the late Eleanor Stoney.

His funeral will be held at 9:00 a.m. on Monday, March 11, 2013 from the Chapman, Cole & Gleason Funeral Home, 2599 Cranberry Hwy., Wareham followed by a Mass ofChristian Burial at 10:00 a.m. in St. Patrick’s Church, 82 High St., Wareham. Burial will follow in Newton Cemetery, Newton.
