After wait, Girls Tennis is victorious

May 14, 2010

What's another few weeks when you've waited all season?

Mother Nature seemed to be against the Girls Tennis team on April 26 as their 2-1 lead (courtesy of senior Allison Covel at first singles and Rachel Bonfiglio at second singles)  against Seekonk was interrupted by rain before the doubles' matches concluded.

But Wareham's second doubles team of Amelia Topoulus and Kayla Wyatt came back from a 4-5 deficit in the first set of their match to break Warrior Lauren Yang's serve.  They then held on to win the match (7-5, 6-1).

Coach Geoff Swett was excited to report his first conference victory.  In his six years as coach, the team has consistently won matches against New Bedford and Middleboro but not against another team in the South Coast Conference.

"Most of [the team] didn't have the same sense of appreciation that I had," joked Swett.

And although Seekonk won the subsequent match 3-2 (the rained-out matches were rescheduled for before the teams' next meeting), and they may not have had as long a wait for victory as their coach, they all enjoyed a victory celebration at the Newport Creamery in Seekonk.
