What's going on in high school sports
The track teams have been doing great with a number of individual athletes winning this week, and senior Aliyah Alley breaking her own record in the 100m.
Track
The boys fell to Apponequet 74-62 on Thursday, April 25. "If Owen Braley was not injured we could have won the 4x100 [relay] and won the meet," said coach John Sousa. Nonetheless, the boys had a bunch of individual victories.
"Richie Austin had an amazing day jumping 19 1/2 inches in long jump, and throwing 133"10 in [javelin]," according to Sousa. Austin won both events.
Mason Vasconcelos dominated the competition in both the mile and the two-mile races, while Charles Transfaglia came out on top in the 100m and 200m. Bryce Spencer Jones took top honors in the 800m.
Johnny Irving took first place in both the shot put and the discus, and Caleb Westgate pulled out a win in the triple jump.
The boys lost to Seekonk on Monday, April 29 97-39. The winners for Wareham were Bryce Spencer Jones in the 800m, and Johnny Irving in the shot put.
"Johnny's toss was a bomb, his best this spring," according to Sousa.
The girls also lost to Apponequet with a score of 70-65 on Thursday, but much like the boys, also had some individual victories.
Aliyah Alley won first place in both the 400m and the 100m, in addition to breaking the school record in the 100m - previously held by herself.
"Aliyah has been working really hard to get her 100m time faster by focusing on getting out of the blocks stronger and quicker," said coach Chris Gardner. "Until this year Aliyah had only ran the 100m twice so for her to get that time down so quickly is great. As of right now, 12.4 is one of if not the fastest times in Division 3 and top five in the state."
The 4x400m relay team won with a team comprised of Emily Cummings, Hunter Thatcher, Anna Richard and Kate Cunningham. Caitlyn Berger won the shot put and the discus, and Maddie St. Julien came in first in the 200m.
The girls were tied going into the relay at 65-65,and although they won the 4x 400 relay the result was disqualified because of a false start.
