Gatemen Alumni Tommy Troy Called Up to Major Leagues

May 24, 2026

An injury to the Arizona Diamondbacks’ outfield brings a need for 24-year-old Tommy Troy to join the big league roster in the midst of their series against the Colorado Rockies.

Troy, a Cape Cod League All-Star in 2021 with Wareham, hit .307 with a .846 OPS over 44 games in Triple-A Reno to begin the season. He joins fellow youngster Ryan Waldschmidt on the Dbacks who was called up in the same month.

He was selected 12th overall in a loaded 2023 draft class; his Cape Cod League performance in addition to a .394 batting average with a Stanford team that reached Ohama earned him a $4.4 million dollar signing bonus.

MLB Pipeline, the largest prospect rating and evaluation site, ranked Troy Arizona’s 4th highest prospect in its farm system. He was also ranked as the third best prospect second baseman. Pipeline’s evaluators raved about the bat skills even at a young age.

“His overall swing decisions are solid too, and he’s generally at his best trying to shoot the ball up the middle of the field.” Pipeline gave Troy a 50/80 batting trait and a 60/80 run trait. “He’s also generally a line-drive hitter more than an aim-for-the-seats type. Gap extra-base hits and the occasional homer (12-15 per season) will fuel his slugging ability in the bigs.”

Troy blew through the Diamondbacks’ minor league system. After just four games in the Arizona Complex League in 2023 he made it up to High-A Hillsboro; Troy spent just 87 games, less than a full season in Double-A last year before a promotion. The reason for this surge? Consistency. Over his three seasons in the minor leagues, Troy’s batting average has only dipped below .270 once. The flash that star prospects generate is undeniable but managers want consistency, especially for a Diamondbacks squad just 1.5 games back from a wildcard spot.

Speaking of his incoming big league club, Troy’s positional flexibility and trusty bat serves a defensive Arizona team extremely well. The star infield duo of Ketel Marte (.251 AVR) and Geraldo Perdomo (.226) have both underperformed at the plate to this point in the season. Only two Diamondbacks have an OPS above .900.

Arizona’s desert–and its playoff push–soon receives one of Wareham’s top products.
