11 have taken out nomination papers as deadline approaches
With the deadline to take out nomination papers for the April 5 election set for 5 p.m. on Feb. 12, 11 people have thrown their hats into races for the Board of Selectmen, School Committee and four other positions.
So far, six candidates have returned nomination papers for Selectmen, Sewer Commission and School Committee seats, as well as the positions of town moderator and assessor. Papers are available at the Wareham Harbormaster’s Office in the Multi-Service Center on Feb. 12 as Town Hall is closed on Fridays.
Nomination papers must be turned in by Tuesday, Feb. 16 with the required number of signatures for a candidate’s name to be placed on the ballot.
Selectmen Steve Holmes’ and Patrick Tropeano’s seats are up for re-election. As of Thursday afternoon, Tropeano and challengers John Ferranti, Michael Frates and Anthony Scarsciotti had taken out nomination papers. Of those, Ferranti and Frates had returned papers on Jan. 19 and Feb. 1, respectively.
A phone call to Holmes seeking comment on his intention to run or not has not been returned.
In the race for School Committee, one seat is available. Incumbent Rhonda Veugen returned her nomination papers to the Town Clerk’s office on Feb. 1. Mary Morgan has taken out papers for the School Committee seat, but has yet to file them.
Town Clerk Mary Ann Silva, who has held the position for almost two decades, returned nomination papers on Jan. 19. Loren Franklin has also taken out papers for town clerk; however, she has not returned them.
For a seat on the Sewer Commission, one candidate still has nomination papers out and one has filed them. Incumbent Marilyn Jordan shas papers circulating while challenger Peter Dunlop filed his papers on Feb. 1.
