13 Wareham DECA students earn a spot in international competition
28 Wareham High School DECA students traveled to Boston for a weekend of business, accounting and entrepreneurial competition.
The competition was the state DECA competition held Thursday, Feb. 27 to Saturday, March 1. Wareham students competed against kids from over 100 schools across the commonwealth.
The competitions have kids role play different scenarios that fall into one of six categories which range from hospitality and tourism to personal finance. Kids also take written tests to test their knowledge.
Two Vikings placed well enough to have been state finalists in their categories. Hannah Milne placed eighth in the accounting applications category and Charlotte Roy, president of Wareham DECA, placed third in marketing communications.
Milne, Roy and 11 other students earned a spot at the International Career Development Conference in Orlando, Florida, being held Friday, April 26 to Wednesday, April 30.

At the conference, the 13 students will put everything they have learned to the test against DECA students from around the world.
Wareham DECA's business efforts at the school were also recognized at the state competition. The club runs the school store selling Viking merchandise and runs the concession stand at basketball games.
The school store received a Gold Re-Certification in School Based Enterprise for Retail Operations and the concession stand received a Gold Certification in School Based Enterprise for Food Operations.
Wareham DECA is hosting their 45th annual lunch and auction fundraiser Sunday, March 23 from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. at Wareham High School to help raise money for the club.
DECA is an international non-profit organization dedicated to teaching kids about business, marketing, finance and more as well as giving them the skills they need to prepare as future entrepreneurs. Each year DECA hosts competitions at district, state and international levels for kids to demonstrate the skills they have learned.
