20 Gatemen total selected in Major League Baseball draft
A total of 20 former and current Wareham Gatemen were taken in the Major League Baseball draft on Friday and Saturday, with two former players going in the top 15 overall picks.
Catcher Kyle Schwarber (Wareham 2012, 2013, Indiana University) was drafted fourth overall by the Chicago Cubs, and left-handed pitcher Sean Newcomb (Wareham 2012, 2013, University of Hartford) went 15th to the Los Angeles Angels, making them the highest-drafted Gatemen pair since 2004.
Gatemen Head Coach Cooper Farris, who is in his 14th year with the team, said that it’s not uncommon for so many players to be drafted, though the 20 tied for the most Gatemen chosen within the last five years.
"It's been like that every year," said Farris after the team's practice Saturday afternoon. ”I'm proud for all of 'em. I know that's their dream, and hopefully we've had a little part of that.”
Also selected on Friday were right-handed closer Jonathan Holder (2012, 2013; Mississippi State) who was selected in the sixth round by the New York Yankees. Infielder Brock Stewart (Wareham 2013; Illinois State) was selected by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the sixth round, and right-hander Andro Cutura (Wareham 2013; Southeastern Louisiana) was selected by the Minnesota Twins in the seventh round.
On Saturday, the Atlanta Braves took right-handed closer Bradley Roney (Wareham 2013; Southern Mississippi) in the 8th round of the draft; left-handed pitcher/outfielder Cole Sturgeon (Wareham 2012, 2013; Louisville) was chosen by the Boston Red Sox in the 10th round of the draft; and the New York Yankees scooped up second baseman Ty McFarland (Wareham 2012; James Madison) in the 10th round.
Other Gatemen drafted include:
- Jared Ruxer, Los Angeles Angels, 12th round.
- Chris Huffman, San Diego Padres, 14th round.
- Joe Filomeno, Texas Rangers, 15th round.
- Matthew Grimes, Baltimore Orioles, 18th round.
- John Bormann, Los Angeles Angels, 19th round.
- Brett Pirtle, Detroit Tigers, 23rd round.
- Mott Hyde, Houston Astros, 26th round.
- Ethan Gross, Chicago White Sox, 26th round.
- Sean McMullen, Houston Astros, 30th round.
- Tucker Simpson, Baltimore Orioles, 39th round.
Bormann, a catcher who currently attends and plays baseball for the University of Texas San Antonio, was the only active member on the current Wareham roster to be drafted. He said he wasn’t sure whether or not he would sign with Angels, but that for the foreseeable future, he’d continue to play with the Gatemen.
“We’ll see what happens,” he said.
