46 student athletes receive academic awards from MIAA
Members of Wareham High School's Winter and Spring Girls Track teams are smart. Really smart.
Recently, 46 members of the two teams (some students were on both) were honored by the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association for academic achievement for this past school year.
At a meeting of the School Committee Wednesday evening, the student athletes were honored for their achievements. Track coach Christopher Gardener said that the winter team's average was 85.7, and that the spring team's was 89.7.
"(The averages were) the highest in the school each season," said Gardener. “(The awards were) something I thought the girls should be recognized for. Without the success in the classroom, they wouldn’t even be on the track.”
Committee Chair Cliff Sylvia also commended the girls for their accomplishments.
“This is what it’s all about," he said. "Academic excellence, and athletic excellence.”
