7-year-old lauded for saving toddler from pool
A 7-year-old Wareham girl was hailed as a hero on Monday for saving a toddler from drowning.
Friends and summer school classmates of Jolee Johnson celebrated her for pulling a 3-year-old out of a West Wareham pool on July 17 during a family party.
“The 3-year-old jumped into the pool without his floaties on, and Jolee yelled, ‘he’s drowning’ before she jumped in to pull him out,” said Lynn Butler, Jolee’s grandmother. “It was really awesome.”
Butler said her granddaughter acted instantly.
“It happened so fast, and she was the first one to notice,” said Butler.
Butler credited Jolee’s cousin, Chase Card, in part for teaching her how to swim. He started giving Jolee lessons last year.
“She remembered all the moves and used them to help the 3-year-old out of the pool,” said Butler.
On Monday morning, Jolee was treated to a cake that read “Just Keep Swimming” by Michelle Skolnik, her special needs teacher. She described her heroic student as “a little mermaid.”
“She’s a very kind, hard working, happy-go-lucky girl,” said Skolnik. “We had all of her classmates, friends and some family here to recognize her. It was great.”
When asked about her role in helping the boy Jolee was modest, choosing to focus on the fact that he’s all right.
“He’s OK, everything’s great,” she said.
