8-year-old Wareham boating accident victim dies
An 8-year-old boy who was submerged beneath a boat that capsized Wednesday near the entrance of the Cape Cod Canal has died, according to published reports.
A letter released by Sudbury Public Schools Sunday identified the boy as Harry O'Connor, a third grade student at Nixon Elementary School, reports said. Harry was among 12 people that included 9 children and three adults thrown overboard after their boat capsized in rough seas in Hog Island Channel.
A Marion diver, Mike Margulis, responded alongside officials from the Coast Guard, Wareham Department of Natural Resources and Marion Harbormaster Department. Margulis found Harry unresponsive near the bow of the overturned boat.
Harry was then flown to Boston Children's Hospital for treatment. The identities of the others involved have not been released at this time. According to Massachusetts Environmental Police, the boat left out of Stone Bridge Marina. Environmental Police are leading the investigation.
